Blogger or WordPress?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/31/Blogger.svg
This isn’t one of my normal posts, in fact it’s something of a fishing exercise, and you could almost describe it as a fact-finding mission. It involves the possibility of switching my blog over from Blogger to WordPress and just wanted to sound out people’s opinions, or better still experiences of using either site.

I’ve been using Blogger, which is Google’s own, cloud-based, blog hosting platform, since starting this blog, nearly 12 years ago, and in the main have fond it easy to use. I have experienced the odd niggle though, especially when it comes to positioning photos and getting the text to wrap round correctly.

The latter problem doesn’t occur all the time, but it can be a nuisance, especially when you attempt to squeeze in that one last extra photo. You can then spend an age having to reposition all the others; something that’s very frustrating when you’re about to pack up for the evening, before hitting the sack. Most of the time though, Blogger is easy to use and relatively user friendly.

So, what about WordPress? I first became aware of the platform six years ago, when I attended my first European Bloggers Conference in Dublin. WordPress were one of the event's main sponsors, and a couple of cool-looking dudes gave a presentation on the company and the benefits of using their software to host one’s blog.

I was tempted back then to give WordPress a go, but my blog seemed to be doing fine as it was with Google’s platform, so I left things alone, on the basis of “If it ain’t broke, don’t try fixing it,” but every so often, and now is one of those moments, I think to myself, should I give it a go?
WordPress / GPL (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html)

Hence the reason for this short, and slightly out of context post. I know that amongst the blogs I follow and sometimes comment on, there are users of both platforms, so I would be interested in learning about people’s views, thoughts and experiences of both Blogger and WordPress.

Thank-you all in advance; I look forward to hearing from you.

I too have stayed with Blogger since I started, but have occasionally wondered about changing over.
My main concern is - how easy is it to transfer all of the archive over from Blogger to Wordpress...or do you lose it all? (Plus transfer of followers?)
My website - www.photodigitalart.co.uk - is on a WordPress platform and I have difficulty positioning photos in the right place with that, so it may be no better than Blogger.
My suggestion would be to try it out for some posts that don't quite fit your current overall theme and see how it goes.
Good luck and I'll be interested in how it goes.

Thanks Pete, some interesting suggestions there. Getting photos positioned correctly, whilst allowing text to flow and "wrap-round," does seem to be a particular problem, so it's interesting to learn that it occurs with WordPress as well. I will take a closer look at your photodigitalart website later, to see how WordPress handles things.

As for transferring over archived material, I imagine that would need to be done manually, and would take an awfully long time. There may be automated options of course and some really clued-up, tech-wizard might be able to advise further on this.

On the other hand, whilst there are plenty of posts I am really pleased with - including some I am actually proud of, there are quite a few others which really deserve to vanish into the ether forever!

Trust you are keeping safe, well and sane during these challenging times. It's hard to believe that just six short weeks ago, we were wandering round Burton, visiting all those smashing pubs, with total impunity and hardly a care in the world!

Blogger used to allow you to do all sorts of things with photos, but with each "improvement" it gets worse.

As for Wordpress - it hates me - so it can do one. Better the devil you know.

All the niceties of photo positioning on Blogger are lost when you view it on a mobile phone anyway.

Paul Bailey said...

Blogger is slightly ahead at the moment, so it would be interesting to hear from a few WordPress devotees.

You are correct about mobile viewing Mudge, but that might be down to the phone software, rather than the hosting platform. (Some tech wiz-kid is going to come on in a minute, and tell me I'm talking b*ll*cks!)

Reader perspective here. They are both easy to read on. However, I have had authentication issues on Wordpress that are hard to fix.

Paul Bailey said...

Now that you mention those issues Dave, I too have experienced similar difficulties. I seem to be able to comment with relative ease on some WordPress sites, whereas others just lose my comments altogether. Attempting to re-post doesn't work either.

WordPress is much more easily customised and once you've got it set up, much easier to run and importantly, read and comment on. Blogger is a throwback.

Although I first registered on Blogger I've never published anything on it and found the setup easier on Wordpress as well as subsequent use. Notifications on replies to comments on other wordpress users blogs are immediate and easy to reply to, sometimes its a bit long winded leeaving a comment on Blogger in my experience. http://ghpub.blogspot.com/2020/04/lyndhurst-through-beer-glass-pt2-white.html Did The switch the other way but since the switch I haven't really kept up with any of his stuff.

The link above is for The Garden Hermit Goes To The Pub 2, the link didn't come up "live", maybe another negative on Blogger, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Curmudgeon said...

Yes, Blogger doesn't automatically convert text to links, you have to use HTML tags:

It’s looking like the jury is still out on this issue. The points raised so far, basically confirm much of what I thought, which is that Blogger and WordPress both have plus and minus points, and that both platforms have their own individual devotees.

On the basis of current feedback I shall leave things as they are, especially as it appears there are no obvious benefits associated with switching. A big thank-you though, to all who have responded and taken the time to submit their feedback.

Your site looks fine for me and is always easy to read as you understand the importance of paragraphs 😉

Paul Bailey said...

Glad the site is easy to read, Martin. And yes, paragraphs certainly help. I struggle with some of Simon's posts for that very reason.

Btw, he's got some serious spam on his site at the moment. Wonder if he's aware?

Curmudgeon said...

One of the features of Blogger I find very useful (and which WordPress offers too) is being able to set it so that all comments after a certain time need approval by the blog owner. Simon's does seem to attract a lot of often very questionable drivel. Although perhaps all the ones about "sugar mommies" are trying to tell him something ;-)
