Reality not quite meeting expectations

My re-introduction to drinking inside a pub and in fact my first pint inside a public house since late October 2020, wasn’t exactly quite what I was expecting. Matthew and I decided the previous evening that we would go out of a pint, and after a little debate decided on the Foresters Arms. Thursday was a wild and windy day, not exactly what one expects in late May. It was also cold.

We set off but the sky looked angry, and I could see rain falling, obscuring the distant hills. So, with Matthew not wearing a proper waterproof coat, (typical youngster!), and umbrellas virtually useless in the strong winds, we had a last-minute change of plan, and made for the much nearer Vauxhall Inn instead.

This former coaching inn and traditional pub, is now a much enlarged Chef & Brewer outlet. Today the chain is owned and operated by Greene King. The Vauxhall has always been a popular haunt of Matthew and his friend, but never favourite of mine, nor of Mrs PBT's. The trouble is I remember it from its Whitbread days, when it was a decent, simple, and quite basic pub on the edge of Tonbridge.

The pub only re-opened on Monday, as for some reason it didn’t take advantage of outdoor drinking that was available from 12th April.  This was strange, as there is a reasonably sized garden area at the side of the pub. What was even stranger, was the lack of vehicles in the car-park, so much so that we weren't even sure the place was open.

It was, and we found a one way system in operation when we arrived, with entry at the side, and exit at the front. We waited at the appointed space and explained to the staff member who appeared to greet us, that we didn’t have a reservation, but just wanted to stay for a couple of pints.

"No problem," said the helpful young man, but could I please scan the QR Code. The link didn’t work on my phone, probably because my default setting is to leave mobile data turned off and relying on Wi-Fi instead. I gave him my mobile number, although he didn’t seem to want Matthew’s, he then escorted us, through a deserted pub, to a table in the corner.

We were sat right below a speaker, a fact which didn’t improve my grumpiness after a hard day at work. When the barman came to take our order for the second round of drinks (see below), I asked, much to Matthew’s embarrassment, if he could turn volume down. He actually turned it off, which was a bonus, but as there were no other customers in the pub, and the staff had probably listened to that particular musical selection several times over, it was no great loss on anyone’s part.

After sitting down, we placed our drinks order. I asked which cask ales were available; the answer being GK IPA, Abbot and Yardbird. Thinking the latter was a keg beer, rather than the late sixties precursor to Led Zeppelin,  I opted for IPA, but later, when leaving the pub and walking past the bar, I noticed the hand pump for Yardbird.

Matthew enquired which lagers the pub had on, only to be told there were no draught lagers available, only bottled Kronebourg, Peroni or Corona. A strange state of affairs, but I later heard the bar staff talking and it turned out there had been a problem in the cellar. They were waiting for a part; it had been delivered but they were now waiting for someone to come and fit it -whatever it might be.

Given the length of time that pubs have been closed, there should have been ample time for the pub’s management to call in Greene King’s cellar service team to check all their systems were functioning correctly, ready for opening on 17th May!

On the subject of the bar staff chatting, there was rather too much of that, and not enough attention paid to customers, even though, for a while, we were the only ones in the pub. For example, when we wanted another round of drinks, I had to get up and stroll over to the bar to attract someone’s attention. That was probably against the current Nanny State rules, but what was I supposed to do?

Some might say, order by app, but I like to speak to and engage with people, and also don’t want to clog up my phone memory with yet more, unwanted apps. I managed a brief chat with the friendly barman, when he brought the card machine over, so we could settle our account. He said that trade had been very quiet, and we both alluded to the part the atrocious weather might have played in this.

He added that the quiet spell has been good for easing the staff back in gently. I replied that he ought to be careful what he wished for, although if truth be known I have never known the Vauxhall to be particularly busy – certainly not in its current form.  

To be fair to the pub and its team, the IPA was in very good form, although as you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, I would have preferred something with a little more flavour. The same applied to the Abbot, and whilst this beer has significantly more body and depth of flavour than IPA, I feel it is missing something. It is certainly not the same beer I remember drinking during visits to Bedford, back in the later 1970’s.

Whilst this wasn’t quite the re-introduction to drinking inside a pub I was expecting, it was still good being able to sit there actually indoors, enjoying a pint or two, along with a chat. And chat we did. Matthew enlightened me about how his saving for deposit on a flat is going, and we discussed a few of the options available to help him get a foot on the property ladder.

It didn’t rain of course, so we could and should have visited the Forester’s. It’s a proper pub, owned by a brewery (Shepherd Neame) and run by a tenant. There will always be another time, or will there, with news breaking that a "triple mutant" strain of Coronavirus has been detected in Yorkshire of all places, who knows what the next move in this sorry saga will be? 

You couldn’t honestly make this sort of sh*t up, and we’re nowhere near the so-called “silly season” for daft news stories at the moment. So, until next time.

The Harvey's is drinking well

Son Matthew had both Saturday and Sunday off this weekend, a rare occurrence for someone who works in retail. He’s been at rather a loose end these past 14 months, when the government’s advice has been to avoid all forms of social contact, wherever possible, and whilst he’s been working since last June, he was furloughed for nearly three months, from the start of the first national lock-down.

It hasn’t exactly been a bundle of laughs for those of us of more mature years, so for youngsters, despite their much greater reliance on social media, it must be ten times worse. Rather than meeting up with their mates, those in the 18-30 age group have been confined largely to quarters, instead of going out having fun.

Mrs PBT’s is laid up having pulled a muscle in her back, so instead of our usual Saturday grocery shopping expedition, she arranged a “click and collect” order for me to pick up from the Tesco superstore at Riverhead, just to the north of Sevenoaks. Matthew said he’d accompany me, as he wanted to pick a few things up as well, so this seemed the perfect opportunity for him and me to enjoy a pint together. The only slight fly in the ointment was the weather, which was “changeable” to say the least.

The pub I had in mind was the White Rock Inn at Underriver, an attractive country pub in a tiny village, at the foot of the Greensand Ridge, just below Knole Park. It’s a pub I hadn’t been to in years, as it’s rather off the beaten track, despite only being a 15-minute drive from Bailey Towers. Mrs PBT’s has been there more recently than me, having enjoyed a meal and get-together with friends from her maternity group, a couple of Christmases ago.

She’d come back with glowing reports about both the food and the pub, and we talked about a visit there ourselves. With the pandemic, that never happened so after our visit to Tesco, it seemed logical for Matthew and me to stop there for a pint, on our way back to Tonbridge. What’s more, the heavy rain we’d experienced earlier had cleared, so all the better for us to enjoy an al fresco pint?

The drive to Underriver turned out to be longer than I remember. I thought it was just a case of turning left at the bottom of River Hill – the main route south out of Sevenoaks, and then taking another left turn, but no, it was further than I thought, and the road too was rather narrow in places, which wasn’t good when encountering SUV’s hurtling towards us in the opposite direction.

We arrived in Underriver in one piece, but as there were an awful lot of parked cars in the approach to the White Rock, I was concerned there would be no room at the inn. My fears proved groundless, and I suspect the abandoned vehicles were due to a wedding taking place at the nearby church. So, with plenty of room in the pub car-park, we joined the queue of people waiting to book in at the rear of the property.

We didn’t have to wait long, and despite not having pre-booked were shown to a table on the patio at the rear of the pub. We were asked to scan the NHS app on our way through, but after explaining that neither of us had the app on our phones, we were asked to supply contact details manually.

I really don’t see the point of doing this when we were sitting outside and several feet away from any other tables, but we did so, and with good grace. After all, the staff are only doing what the control freaks of SAGE - or is it Nervtag now? are asking of them, and if it helps keep pubs open, then that’s OK with me.

As mentioned above there were several groups of people sat out on the patio, and quite a few more in the extensive garden behind. The only problem was, would the weather hold, as the only protection were the pub-umbrellas on each table. Fortunately, the rain held off – think most of it must have fallen earlier, whilst I was walking around the garden section of Homebase in Sevenoaks.

The waiting staff were kept busy, taking orders and ferrying food and drink out to customers, and before long I’d ordered myself a pint of Harvey’s Best, plus whatever lager they happened to have on, for Matthew. The waiter pointed to the embroidered logo on his polo shirt, advertising a brand of beer that used to be brewed in Amsterdam, so it was a pint of Amstel for the lad.

The Harvey’s was on top form, cool, crystal clear and well-conditioned, and what’s more it tasted good as well. As I’m no longer a CAMRA member, I can’t submit beer scores, but it was at least a 4.0 NBSS. It didn’t last too long either, but as I was driving, I resisted having another, even though I was sorely tempted.

Matthew and I had a good father and son chat, something we haven’t done for quite some time. He mentioned that this was his first pint in a pub since last summer, so I said we ought to do this more often. With him working most weekends, or at least a Saturday or a Sunday, it hasn’t always been easy, but it is something we should aim for, given that pubs will be reopening inside from Monday onwards.

Matthew also hasn’t had what I’d call a proper holiday in ages; certainly not since May 2018, when him and I accompanied a group of friends from Maidstone CAMRA, on a visit to Bamberg. We were supposed to have been joining the same bunch on a trip to Pilsen last May, but the pandemic put paid to that.

This whole father-son relationship is something I want to explore in another post, so I will leave it at that for the moment. In the meantime, the White Rock delivered on all fronts, and is certainly a place worthy of a return visit. I even had a quick peak inside when I nipped in to use the Gents. No photos unfortunately, as I'm not adept at snapping a quick one, on the hoof!

Re-setting the balance between work and home

I mentioned at the start of the previous article that I was suffering from “writer’s block.” It hasn’t really gone away, but at least I’ve managed to nail the real reason for my malaise. Basically, it’s being in a rut; a situation I dislike, especially as I’m supposed to be winding down at work. The irony is, that as my stint in charge of the company’s Quality Control function, draws to a close, if anything, I’m busier than ever.

I mentioned before that my plan is to go part-time from the end of September, working a 3-day week, instead of five days. Things are progressing on that front, as the company has managed to recruit my successor, and she’ll be starting at the beginning of next month. To begin with she will work alongside me, learning about the job, the department, and the company, and will gradually assume more and more responsibility.

Teaching this new incumbent is a task I’m really looking forward to, but in the meantime, there are a few issues that need ironing out. I’ve a key member of staff off sick at the moment, so I’m trying to spread her workload amongst the rest of the department, and that includes me taking on my share of the work. The trouble is this has come at a time when the company’s order book is at a record high, as there has been an unprecedented demand for dental products.

No-one seems to know why. Our customers are unable to tell us the reason and the industry body we belong to, can’t either. All we know is that after the shutdown caused by the pandemic, there has been a totally unexpected surge in demand for dental materials.

All well and good, you might say and better make hay whilst the sun is still shining. Others would say it’s a good problem to have, and they would be right, providing the resources are in place to deal with all these orders. Unfortunately, they are not and we’re experiencing real difficulties in coping with this unprecedented demand.

I’m mightily relieved that I work on the quality rather than the operations side, as our Production Manager looks absolutely worn out. With too many balls to juggle and too many demands from various factors, the poor chap is not having an easy time of it.

He has my sympathies, as having served a stint as Production Manager in a previous company, I know exactly the pressures he will be feeling under. On the one side there will be the sales team who, having promised the earth to competing customers, will be on his back wondering why so and so’s order hasn’t been completed. On the other side, he will be attempting to ensure there are sufficient stocks of raw materials, containers, and packaging items, along with the manpower necessary to process all these orders in a timely fashion.

Believe you me, it is not an easy task, especially when you are a conscientious individual, like he is, and I was. You don’t like letting people down and you don’t want the sales department constantly on you back either. So how does this impact on my department and, more importantly, me?

It impacts quite a lot, as all incoming goods, whether they’re raw materials, containers, closures, cartons, or labels, have to be inspected and tested, where appropriate. This is QC’s responsibility and a vital part of our Quality Management System (QMS). In addition, the bulk intermediate products, have to undergo full laboratory tests to ensure full compliance with the appropriate ISO Standard.

And then there’s the paperwork, and our organisation generates huge amounts; so much so that it is drowning in the stuff! It’s all very necessary though, as we are required to maintain full lot-traceability on all our products, and this includes details of every batch of the components described above. Thankfully, in a few months’ time, it will be someone else’s problem, but it is keeping me far busier than I would have liked.

I’ve laboured these points quite a bit, but they go a long way to explaining why I’m feeling tired and jaded at present, and why I’m lacking the motivation to go out of an evening or to even look for beer-related stories to write about.

It’s also good to get things off one’s chest, even though, in a perverse sort of way, I really like my job and despite the undoubtedly heavy workload, the company is heading in the right direction. One of my management colleagues was appointed as General Manager at the beginning of March, and as someone who has been with the firm for a long time, and worked his way up from the shop floor, it is a thoroughly deserved promotion.

It is also a welcome change in direction from the absolute clown the board saddled us with, almost two and a half years ago – an appointment that, with hindsight, was made out of desperation, combined with a desire to fill the GM’s position, at any cost.

So, with pubs, restaurants, and other forms of hospitality due to open up again next week (Galapagos Islands and other obscure variants of Covid, permitting), there’s going to be one helluva lot to commit to paper. Rest-assured I will do my best to bring these stories to your attention and, if you’ve managed to stay the course so far, thank-you for your patience.

That's all for now folks!

I’ve been suffering from a touch of “writer’s block,” even though, after yesterday’s announcement from the Prime Minister, there’s plenty to write about. For some, like prolific blogger and avid GBG "ticker" Retired Martin, seven days is too long to wait for the opportunity to enjoy a drink within the confines of a pub, but with the weather still quite changeable, I’m sure Martin is not alone in his desire for a pint indoors.

Beer continues to make the headlines in other ways, with brewers such as Heineken having to limit supplies of certain brands, to just three kegs per pub. The company admit that they underestimated demand, with sales levels hovering around what would be normal levels for April, with all pubs open. But with only 40% of outlets able to open with outdoor service, this demonstrates an unprecedented surge in demand, caused by months of pent-up longing for a pub-pulled pint.

Particularly hard hit are Heineken’s Birra Moretti and Amstel brands, despite the firms UK breweries working flat out. The struggling to keep up with demand scenario was confirmed by rivals, Budweiser Brewing, although the latter haven’t experienced any significant shortages so far.

All is not lost though, as the British Beer & Pub Association have stated there is still plenty of beer to go around, so it will be interesting to see what happens next week when pubs are allowed to serve customers in an indoor setting.

Looking further afield, it will probably come as no surprise that Munich’s world-famous Oktoberfest has been cancelled for the second year running. The news comes as Germany struggles to contain the second wave of Covid; a situation compounded by the slow roll-out of the country’s vaccination programme.

The cancellation comes at roughly the same time as last year’s announcement but given all the work involved and massive amount of preparation that goes into staging the event, the decision was perhaps inevitable.  This is despite the availability of vaccines, and the world seemingly in a better place than this time last year.

It is the right call in my view, as Oktoberfest attracts some six million visitors each year, many of whom are from overseas. The thought of all those bodies, huddled together in the myriad of tents that cover the fairground (Wiess’n), swaying away in time to the Oompah band, inhibitions loosened after several large mugs of strong, Festbier, and you’ve got the perfect cocktail of conditions for allowing the virus to start spreading again. Far better to wait another year and then, fingers crossed, enjoy one helluva party!

It’s a shame that the International Olympic Committee aren’t thinking along the same lines, rather than plough on with the Tokyo Games.  Even more so when one considers the authorities in Japan still haven’t got Corona properly under control, and the roll-out of vaccines in the country has barely begun.

 I imagine it’s all about the money, as Jessie J sang, ten years ago now, but what about the athletes and other competitors? Where is the Olympic
glory in giving it your all, in front of a handful of specially invited spectators, in an otherwise empty stadium?  Think of the millions of Yen spent building these arenas, the swimming pools, cycle tracks etc, to say nothing of all the associated access and transit systems.

Again, why not wait another year, and then re-start the whole four-year Olympic cycle afresh, in 2022? The world really needs to show a little more patience here – Take That, if you’ll pardon the pun and associated musical reference.

My final piece of news is I eventually finished March’s box of a dozen dark beers, which I received through my subscription to FUGSCLUB. There were some stunning beers in the box, and I will probably highlight some of the stand-out ones in a later post.

In the meantime, April’s box arrived nearly three weeks ago, and all I’ve done so far, is lovingly admire some of the, from a distance. They will keep though, and if I carry on accumulating them at this rate, I shall have a nice little stash tucked away in time for that “C” word.

The other bonus is, if I carry my subscription through unto June, which I fully intend to do, I will receive a £15 voucher that I can use in either of Fuggles two beer cafés, when they finally reopen, later next week. 

So, for the time being at least, as the curtain goes down and the Looney Tunes credits start to roll, “That’s all for now folks!”

Constellation find the right alignment

As promised, I made a visit to Tonbridge’s latest brewery, Constellation and, despite the unseasonably cold start to May managed to enjoyed a couple of the company’s beers, out on the newly installed outdoor decking area, at the front of the brewery.

I left my visit until late Monday afternoon, having taken advantage of the late appearance of the threatened Bank Holiday rain. Despite the rain staying away, there was a cold north-westerly wind blowing, but I managed to more or less finish what I’d set out to achieve in the garden, before heading out for a few well-earned pints.

The physical activities of digging, raking, and mowing kept me reasonably warm, but I knew that once I stopped moving, and sat down I would start to feel the cold. Mrs PBT’s called me a wuss for adding an additional layer of clothes – not that she’d set foot outside all day, but I was certainly glad that I did.

It’s quite a boring walk down to the industrial area where Constellation have set up shop, and the access road sandwiched in between one of the area’s largest haulage contractors and the town’s sewage works, is not particularly inviting, but according to my Smart Watch, it was less than a couple of miles – and that included a small detour to pick up some milk, from a local convenience store.

The access road opens out into the Orchard Business Park (why do developers insist on such inappropriate rustic sounding names for their developments? ), and it didn’t take me long to locate Constellation’s unit. Although there seemed to be quite a party taking place on the outside decking area, there were still several tables free.

As I made my way passed the brewery entrance, a chap came out to greet me and to hand me a beer menu. He turned out to be head brewer Rob, and he apologized for the rather noisy, but good spirited group, who were members of his extended family.

There were two cask and four keg beers on offer, so to start with at least, I opted for one of the cask beers. Indus IPA – Session Ale, pale in colour, well-conditioned and with nice refreshing, hoppy “bite” to it, turned out to be a good opening choice. It was very reasonably priced too, at just £3.40 a pint.

After bringing my pint over, Rob stopped for a brief chat, asking if I’d come far and how I’d found out about Constellation. Once I’d answered his questions, he told me a bit about his background along with that of his business partner, Barry.  Rob has 10 years’ experience working at another Kent brewery.  I won’t give the game away by naming it, but it isn’t in the immediate vicinity, and it isn’t one you might expect.

Barry’s background is in technical services and refrigeration, especially in relation to cellar services for pubs, bars, and restaurants. He will also be learning more about the brewing side, combining this with his cellar experience, to ensure that the final product will be poured to perfection. 

Specialist companies, that take care of a pub or bars’ cellar requirements, are starting to emerge in both the UK and the Irish Republic.  My brother-in-law and I had a discussion on the need for such a service, as we sat in an Ohio bar one afternoon, wondering how it managed to stock such a large range of beers, and keep them all in good condition. 

He wasn’t sure how this is handled in the states, and I wasn’t over sure about the situation here in Britain, but having the right cooling and dispense equipment, along with keeping the beer lines scrupulously clean, is of vital importance and can make or break a bar’s reputation.  I imagine this is the sort of service Rob’s business partner, Barry provides. Doing this, could also provide a convenient shoe-in, for Constellation beers.

I opted for something different for my second beer, choosing the brewery’s 4.7% Hydra Lager. Priced at £4.00, it was a thirst-quenching, full-bodied beer, constructed around a firm malt base. I mentioned to Rob that it reminded me a Czech Pilsner, and he replied that such a beer was exactly what he’d been aiming for.

So, what are Constellation’s plans for the future? Pretty big, by all accounts, as they have opted for a 30-barrel plant, capable of producing up to 8,500 pints per brew. Starting off large negates the need to upgrade – a disruptive process as many breweries have found to their cost.

At the moment, the brewery is still testing the market, and finding its way. There are six core beers, and these will be complemented by seasonal and other more adventurous brews, as things progress.  They are certainly a welcome addition to the local beer scene, and this especially applies to their taproom.

Tapping a new demand - brewery taprooms

At the beginning of the year, I mentioned the opening of a new brewery in my adopted hometown of Tonbridge. Constellation Brewing occupy, small unit in a relatively new development of such facilities, on the edge of the town’s sprawling industrial estate. I mentioned at the time that several friends had sampled Constellation’s wares beer. The brewery was selling 5 litre mini kegs of their beers for people to click and collect.

As well as debating as to whether West Kent needed another brewery, and the impact its appearance would have on the performance of other local breweries, I also advised that Constellation had plans to open a taproom at the brewery. This was planned to coincide with the easing of pandemic restrictions, even though at the time, the PM’s “roadmap out of lock-down” hadn’t yet been formulated, let alone published.

Constellation’s taproom finally opened to the public on Saturday.  I was altered to this by a message on social media, that flashed up on my phone, and had every intention of paying the place a visit. Unfortunately, Mrs PBT’s had other ideas that included a shopping expedition to Sevenoaks. To cut a long story short, by the time son Matthew arrived home from work, and we’d had our evening meal, there was insufficient time for a visit.

I do intend to call in before the long Bank Holiday Weekend is over, but in the meantime, I want to take a closer look at the idea of brewery taprooms and reflect on a few of the ones I have visited, both here and abroad. They are certainly a relatively new concept, particularly on this side of the Atlantic, but one which seems to be catching on in various parts of the world.

I’m not exactly sure where the idea of a brewery taproom first came from, because when talking about such a space, I’m not referring to what us older drinkers would think of as a “brewery tap.”  This, by definition, should be the nearest pub to the brewery, and examples which spring to mind include the Ram Inn, in Wandsworth, the George & Devonshire in Chiswick and the John Harvey Tavern in Lewes.

The latter two pubs serve as brewery taps for Fuller’s and Harvey’s breweries respectively, whereas the Ram is now devoid of the brewery it once served, following the sad closure of the adjacent Ram Brewery of Young & Co Ltd.

Given their proximity to the parent brewery, all three pubs acted as convenient meeting places for brewery tours, plus the opportunity of a generous sampling of the brewery’s products, at the end of the visit. I certainly have fond memories of enjoying a few, pre-brewery tour beers, in all three pubs.

Other pubs have fulfilled this function in an unofficial way, one prime example being the excellent Cooper’s Tavern, in Burton-on-Trent. I visited this iconic little back street pub with members of the Beer & Pubs Forum, at the beginning of March last year, and enjoyed what turned out to be some of my last, pre-pandemic pints.

A completely different concept is that of the brewery taprooms, and these are the prime focus of this article. The main difference is they normally form part of the brewery itself, rather than being a stand-alone building, such as a pub, and with the bulk of the new wave of micro-breweries housed in industrial units, this makes perfect sense.

Many so-called taprooms will have started out as little more than a few tables and chairs, or even some bench seating, housed in a convenient part of the brewery, where the brewery’s beers (keg as well as cask), can be sampled and enjoyed. Nowhere is this layout more evident than on the legendary Bermondsey Beer Mile in South London. Son Matthew and I undertook this crawl in June 2014, when it consisted of only a half dozen breweries the majority housed in railway arches. Today’s participants will need a lot more saying power, as there are now fifteen of them!

The general layout was as described above, but as all the venues on the crawl were working breweries, and only open to the public on Saturdays, the facilities on offer were basic at best, and rudimentary at worst (especially the toilets). They did however, set the scene and provided a glimpse of what was to come in subsequent years.

The first “proper” brewery taproom I experienced was that of By the Horns Brewery, which I visited three years later. The brewery is situated on
an industrial park, in the Summerstown area of South-West London, and was founded in 2011. The brewery has since expanded into adjoining units on either side of the original. Sharing the site with the brewery, is a tap-bar, and a bottle shop. This is good news for local beer lovers and the brewery has now become a much-valued part of the local community.

By The Horns set the bar for brewery taprooms as far as I was concerned, but whilst I’d visited a couple of other breweries in between, it wasn’t until a couple of years later that I experienced another proper one.

Cellar Head Brewing Company was founded by Chris and Julia McKenzie in 2017. They were joined by Dave Berry, whose previous brewing experience included stints at both Old Dairy Brewery and Tonbridge Brewery. Cellar Head's cask beers are un-fined, which means they carry a natural haze and are also vegan-friendly. In addition, they do not filter or pasteurise their bottled beers and neither do they artificially carbonate them.

Cellar Head beers were well-received locally, and just two years later they opened a new brewery and taproom, just off the A21 at Flimwell, between Tunbridge Wells and Robertsbridge. To celebrate the opening of their flash new premises, the brewery held a birthday party, which I attended along with a group from West Kent CAMRA. We arrived by coach, already suitably lubricated, on our way home from a visit to Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes, earlier in the day.

Cellar Head’s premises are housed in a small industrial-type unit, situated down a rather narrow lane, and with all the parked cars belonging to other visitors, our driver found it rather difficult to squeeze the coach past and find a suitable parking place, but all credit due, he managed it without any scrapes.

The party was in full swing when we arrived, with everyone having a good time. There were plenty of thirsty punters, plus quite a few families, sat at picnic-benches both inside and out. There were three beers on hand-pump, plus a couple of keg ones. There was also a food truck parked outside.

The whole brewery-taproom set-up, along with the al fresco drinking, reminded me of the Vanish Farmwoods Brewery in Leesburg, Virginia, which I visited whilst attending the Beer Bloggers & Writer’s Conference in the United States, the previous August.  With its stunning rural setting with views over the local countryside – this time across to Bewl Water, and the families there with their children, enjoying a few beers, I could have been back in rural Virginia. There was even a duo blasting out country and western music in the bar!

That evening excursion to Vanish Farmwoods Brewery, involved a coach ride deep into the heart of rural Virginia, with the brewery acting as our hosts for the evening. The event showcased not just their own craft beers, but also brews from some of the other Virginia based breweries. Vanish had also laid on an amazing barbeque for us, which included some of the most delicious and tender roast beef it has been my pleasure to have experienced.

What I liked about the place was it was very family oriented, with a large outdoor play area for the kids, plus a large off-sales section where visitors could load up with bottles and cans to take away, as well as filling up their "growlers" with freshly brewed craft beer.

This particular taproom was one of several I visited during my time at the Beer Bloggers & Writer’s Conference. Others included Lost Rhino Brewing, Stone Brewing and Triple Cross Brewing, and all were good, in their own way.

You probably get the picture by now, so I will end here, and report on Tonbridge’s effort once I have made that promised visit to Constellation Brewing.

Have vaccine - will travel

It can’t have escaped anyone’s notice that the concept of Covid-Passports has been very much in the news, during recent months. The idea has been mooted, as we come out of lock-down, as a possible way of opening up society quicker, whilst at the same time remaining safe and stopping the virus from spreading once again.

The multi-billion-pound travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors in particular, are crying out for a return to some semblance of normality, and Covid-Passports of some shape of form, could prove the way out of the current mess.


The idea behind such a document is it would certify that the holder has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and despite obvious concerns regarding civil liberties and discrimination, plans for such a scheme seem to be gaining traction.  It’s still largely theoretical at present, at least in the UK, but countries such as Denmark and Israel that have emerged from the pandemic relatively unscathed, are already piloting such documents.

The European Union is also working on its own scheme, although given the discrepancies between some of the member states in terms of Covid resilience and widely varying infection rates, the roll-out of such a document could still be some way off.  Britain too, seems to be testing the water, but without committing itself to anything definite at the moment.

This leads on nicely to two items of news which, whilst not intentionally related, are turning out to be very closely connected. I’ll deal with the imminent story first, before moving on to the second item which not only takes place in four and a half months’ time but is also an event which requires a lot more explanation.

News item number one: this afternoon (Thursday), Mrs PBT’s and I will be having our second shot of the Covid vaccination, so two to three weeks after that, we should expect maximum protection against this particular Coronavirus.

News item number two: the pair of us have booked a holiday for mid-September. So, what you might say, lots of people are looking ahead and booking themselves some much needed time away. But what if I told you the holiday, we’ve booked is a cruise?

You’d probably be thinking that we’re mad. After all, remember all those passengers trapped on board cruise ships, just over a year ago, when the Corona-virus pandemic was really starting to take hold. Confined to their cabins for days on end, passengers aboard these vessels quickly found their luxury accommodation had turned into floating prisons.

There is a subtle difference though between these traditional cruises and the one we have just moved, because our voyage aboard the Cunard Queen Elizabeth will not only be confined to British territorial waters, but passengers will be restricted to UK citizens and residents.

Given the uncertainty regarding the ending of all lock down restrictions and the present restrictions on foreign travel, this kind of makes sense, and our four night stay aboard the vessel, will see us cruising from Southampton to Liverpool and back, via the Irish Sea. We have a day ashore in Liverpool, and whilst I have made several visits to the city Mrs PBT’s has never been there.

In addition, the cruise hasn’t cost us a penny, as we had credit left from last year’s cancelled cruise to Hamburg; in fact, after booking this current cruise, we’ve still got sufficient credit left to pay the deposit on another one!

Another advantage of the cruise is not only is our accommodation paid for, but so are all our meals. We can even, if we wish – and Mrs PBT’s certainly will be wishing, opt for room service and have breakfast delivered to our cabin. Drink admittedly is extra, but with a fridge in the room, I will be bringing along a selection of tinnies so I can enjoy a cool beer whilst we’re sitting out on our balcony enjoying the sea air and as we sail along the Welsh coastline.

The accommodation aspect is important, as without wishing to appear smug, overnight stays anywhere in the UK are going to be at a premium, given the uncertainty surrounding foreign travel at the moment, and the fact that holidays on home soil will probably be the norm for 2021.

Several of my work colleagues are already bemoaning the exorbitant costs that many hotels are charging (double pre-pandemic prices in many instances), whist finding a cottage or apartment to rent, is as rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth.

There is, however, a sting in the tail, but one which, if I’m brutally honest, I was half expecting. I’m sure though, that many would just regard it as a sensible precaution, given what the world has just been through and what we are still experiencing.

You see, hidden away in the small print of the T&Cs of our booking confirmation, is a requirement for all passengers to have had both doses of their Covid vaccinations. This is because the voyage is for Covid-19 vaccinated UK residents only. The definition of vaccinated is a minimum of seven days from the second dose of the currently approved Covid-19 vaccine being administered.

Proof of vaccination, and dates given, will be required (approved forms of evidence to be confirmed prior to departure), and will need to be shown at the terminal, prior to boarding. In other words, a Covid-19 passport is required.

Finally, as our cruise will be one of Cunard’s first voyages, following the pause in their operations, the ship will have a significantly reduced number of guests on board, to “better enable a smooth return to sailing.” The wording is, “approved forms of evidence to be confirmed.” In other words, whatever HMG come up with. 

That’s fine with me, as there was never any way that either of us were not going to have the vaccine and, irrespective of cruising requirements, we will be fully vaccinated some considerable time ahead of scheduled departure, but for how long these types of Covid Passport will be necessary, in order to travel, remains to be seen.
